Physiology

Anubi are very simply anthropomorphic jackals. Their torsos have human structure and musculature, while their heads, tails, and legs are of more canid construction. Their heads have a full muzzle and large mobile ears which may seem slightly out of proportion for those used to foxes, dogs, and wolves. Their builds, by human standards are generally tall and thin, or tall and athletic, with the females averaging 5'10", and the males averaging 6'2". Most have dark grey or black fur, while about 1 in 4 have the golden-brown fur pattern of their animal counterparts.

Their tails are long, hanging down to within 6" of the ground. Their legs are digitigrade in stance, with large paws. Their claws are fairly small, as anthro species go, blunt black claws that are generally under 1cm in length. They do not sweat very much, instead relying on their mouths to dissipate heat, though they are extremely resilient to temperature fluctuations, and can be comfortable anywhere from 10 to 45 C.

Anubi sight averages 16/20 by human metrics, and is dichromatic, with fair low-light vision. Their sense of smell is excellent, and hearing is well above human average. Genitalia resembles their canid counterpart, and females have two breasts, though about 1 in 10 end up with a second pair of equal or lesser size, and about 1 in 1000 end up with more than that. Single births are the norm, with twins occurring at 1 in 80 births, similar to human intervals. Gestation lasts 7 months, and the pups are born underdeveloped by human standards.

Natural Magics

-Anubi can naturally access and navigate the underworld
-Anubi can sense when a nearby person or animal is in the process of dying, whether very slow or very fast. This may seem like an obvious thing, but has proven highly useful in early detection of terminal disease. It is purported to be linked to their fascination with death, that feeling this power at work is of intense interest to the Anubi.

Culture

Anubi culture is largely built around a species identity of being regal and aloof. They want other races to look up to them as a whole, and are keenly aware of questions of "optics" and public perception, both individually, communally, and in their species-brand. As a result, they tend to self-regulate one another and to conform to the overarching whole. Being one of the more numerous races, anubi have a great deal of regional variation in precisely what they're like. Interests and capabilites range heavily, and aside from a few items common to their species, their personalities are every which way.

However, their culture shares a species-wide fascination for all things death and pain. This does not mean that they kill or are sadistic, but simply that the themes are of intense interest to them. This can manifest in the books that they read, or the types of theatre they like, in the sorts of things they collect, but most notably in the humour they enjoy. Human adventurers have actually found that a good way to put a group of anubi at better ease is to tell a few Dead Baby Jokes. Even forcemark anubi have a difficult time treating these themes as something that's meant to offend.

Less experienced anubi will try the same tactic in reverse, and the backlash can sometimes be severe enough that young anubi will stop speaking to other races for a time. This occurred most famously when a high priest diplomat of Anubis respectfully suggested to Tony Blair (with Her Majesty present) that pledging delivery of the Queen's corpse to Anubis himself after her death would be an ideal gesture of faith in the newly signed peace treaty.

The Youtube clip of that incident remains one of the primary images that the world at large has of the anubi race, and remains a thorn in their attempts to present their race positively.

Roleplay Notes

Anubi are instinctively attuned to the perceptions of others, and consequently are naturally driven towards seeking credit and approval of others, particularly leaders and gods. As befits their creator, they are naturally in tune with the themes and concepts of death, and are extremely difficult to rattle with images of death, mutilation, blood, or pain. Obviously they don't want to die or bleed themselves, but can confront the realities clinically, or even with some interest, which has led to many races considering the anubi to be rather callous and disturbed.

Challenges for forcemarked anubi include: Adjusting to an increase in vanity and creating a self-brand to show the world that is suitably impressive, avoiding "being creepy" since other species do not share the appreciation for the myriad of ways to explore the instinctive interest in death, the tendency to trust and clique with like-minded anubi to the exclusion of other races.
